About Us

What we do

Dearne Valley Walking Group was formed on April 13th 2009 by Terence Rowland, originally as a Facebook group to show his family and friends about his walking exploits.
This has since grown into an independent walking group.  The walks we enjoy are open to everyone and we currently have approximately 50 active participants.
DVWG organises walks and occasional social events mainly in South Yorkshire & Peak District on a regular basis for our members and their families. Some of our walks are further afield, eg. Snowdonia and the Lake District.
We are a non-profit organisation but maintain a small kitty of donations to cover running and administrative costs.
We have both an adult and junior section to the group, why not come along and walk with us?

Group Rules

We are an informal group with only a few simple rules:

  • All walking adults will be asked to donate £1 to group funds at each walk attended. There is no membership and therefore no subscriptions or membership fees.

  • DVWG simply publicises a diary of events and anyone who wishes to accompany us does so of their own volition.  Participants attend at their own risk and accept responsibility for their own children and pets. Our group accept no liability of any sort for any adverse incident occuring on a group outing.

  • In the interests of safety of participants and livestock, dogs must be kept on leads and under their owner's control at all times.

  • The walk leader invites all participants to join them in a local pub or cafe for well-earned refreshments after every walk.

Want to walk with us?

If you would like to accompany us on any of our walks, please use the Contact Form in the first instance and provide us with your contact details. We will then get in touch and really hope to see you on a walk soon.

What to bring

If attending a walk please bring proper walking boots, a waterproof jacket and enough food and water for the distance to be covered. In poor weather we also advise you bring waterproof trousers, hat and gloves and a change of warm clothing for afterwards. In exceptionally sunny conditions, a sun hat, sunglasses, sun screen and additional water are advisable. Other than that, just be sure to bring your £1 donation and a little extra cash if you wish to partake in any refreshment opportunities at the end of (or en route of) the walk.

Club Championship

In order to encourage participation in club events, we organise a club championship for both adults and children.

Club participants are awarded 1 point for every complete mile walked on a club event.  Prizes are awarded for both categories at the end of our group's season, which falls at the end of June each year.

Have you got a walk you'd like the group to do?

Please see the Downloads section of the site for a proposal form and details of how to submit it.
