Dearne Valley Walking Festival Success - 15/04/24
Yesterday saw the conclusion of our Dearne Valley Walking Festival which marked Dearne Valley Walking Group’s 15th birthday. The 7 mile circular walk from Barnburgh was followed by a delicious carvery meal at the Crown Inn.
The last week has seen our group complete 8 days of walking and, more importantly, raise a significant amount of funds for our chosen charity – Yorkshire Air Ambulance. With all funds having been credited to our Just Giving page we are absolutely delighted to announce that we have raised an incredible amount of £1039.05, which with the addition of Gift Aid, gives us a final total of £1298.81 to go to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
This is a staggering amount for us to raise and we extend our thanks to everyone who has contributed in any way, shape or form be that through walking with us, leading walks, organising, donating or collecting donations. Thanks also to all the pubs who have allowed us to collect : The Travellers (Oxspring), Pastures Lodge (Mexborough), Rockingham Arms and the George & Dragon (Wentworth), The Station Inn (Silkstone Common), The Crown Inn (Barnburgh) and finally Clayton & Frickley Club. Your help has been greatly appreciated.
Over the course of the festival sixty three people walked with our group, completing a combined total of 852 miles with four people completing all eight walks – Debbie Elliott, Lynn Sidebottom, Ian Simpson and Tess Simpson. A big well done to Debbie, Lynn, Ian and Tess on this achievement as well as well done and thanks to everyone who walked with us.
The festival kicked off with a 6.25 mile Darfield Boundary walk on Sunday 7th April and was followed by walks at Oxspring on Monday evening, Cawthorne on Tuesday evening, Scout Dike Walk on Wednesday evening, Conisbrough on Thursday evening, Wentworth on Friday and Silkstone Common on Saturday before Sunday’s final walk at Barnburgh.
We hope everyone will join us again for our next festival when Dearne Valley Walking Group turns 20 years old in five years time...

DVWG Walking Festival Gets Under Way - 08/04/24
A heavy rain shower just in time for the opening ceremony couldn't detract from an enthusiastic start to Dearne Valley Walking group's 15th Anniversary Walking Festival yesterday morning.
The Mayor & Mayoress of Barnsley opened the festival outside the Old Moor Tavern before the group embarked on a 6.25 mile Darfield Boundary Walk. Also in attendance was Holly Whitehouse from Yorkshire Air Ambulance who we are raising funds for during the festival.
An encouraging group off 33 walkers completed the walk with many enjoying as post walk pint in the Old Moor Tavern after the walk. We were joined by six new faces with Ian Armstrong, Ariene Armstrong, Lynne Mott, Carol Turner, Ian Lanch and Gisele Salviana all walking with the group for the first time.
After the walk we also collected a fantastic amount of £29.83 in donations towards the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

2024 DVWG Lake District Weekend
The 2024 May Day Bank Holiday Weekend will see Dearne Valley Walking Group make its third trip to the Lake District but with a change of base this time around.
On this occasion we will base ourselves at Ambleside for walks on Saturday 4th May to Monday 6th May.
The provisional walk outline is :
Saturday 4th May – A 9 mile circular from Ambleside to Grassmere and back, circling Grasmere Lake and Rydal Water. This will be mainly undulating with a total ascent of around 920ft.
Sunday 5th May – A tougher 8.5 mile circular ascent of Loughrigg Fell which is a hill of 1099ft in height. The route also passes Loughrigg Tarn and (fog/mist permitting! lol) enjoys superb views of the surrounding areas. It will entail around 1700ft total ascent.
Monday 6th May – A steady short walk (yet to be confirmed) of around 4/5 miles to finish off the weekend before the return home.
There is no obligation to participate in all 3 walks but we are asking participants to make a £3 donation for taking part in the weekend irrespective of the number of walks participated in.
As previously, we will look to arrange a group meal on the Saturday evening. Details regarding this will be published shortly.
Individuals will need to book their own accommodation. We recommend that people arrive on Friday 3rd May and book accommodation appropriately so that no-one is travelling to Ambleside on the Saturday morning before the walk.

More definite arrangements will be announced nearer the time but an outline of the current schedule is as follows:
Saturday 29th April – Catch the bus from Keswick to Seatoller and walk back via Rosthwaite and Grange which will give options to stop along the way for refreshments.
Sunday 30th April – Catch the bus from Keswick to Threlkeld and ascend Blencathra via Scales Fell and then descend Blencathra to walk back into Keswick which will be a total distance of around 10 miles and a total ascent of around 3800 feet.

Covid Update - 14/05/21
DVWG have discussed the government’s announcement on May 10th and decided on a revised walk format for future walks from May 17th.
Following relaxation of rules regarding outdoor meetings allowing 30 people to meet outdoors we have decided that we will approach this change cautiously and allow slightly larger groups on our walks.
The new format will be two distanced groups consisting of a group leader and ten participants. A total walk size of 22 people.
We hope everyone is happy with this change which is intended to allow larger groups whilst still preventing transmission of COVID-19.
A polite reminder from DVWG - 28/04/21
Booking on our walks remains limited to a total of three socially distanced groups of six people at this time until restrictions are lifted in a less ambiguous manners and DVWGs management committee are convinced that the safety of everyone coming along to our walks can be maintained.
This inevitably means that often walks fill up quickly and some people can sadly be disappointed when they are not allocated a place.
With this in mind we wish to politely remind everyone that a booking is only secure once the £1 booking donation to DVWG is paid via PayPal or other electronic means for people who do not have a PayPal account. This keeps the booking process fair for everyone.
Going forwards in the event of walks becoming full, place preference will be given to fully completed and paid up bookings.
FUTURE WALK ANNOUNCEMENTS - 09/04/21
Until we are able to confidently plan and publish walks in advance again all our walks will be announced initially on our Facebook page (click here) and via text message. Due to a limited amount of places on each walk places must be booked in advance. Should you wish to be notified of future walks via text message then please send an email to [email protected]
WE ARE BACK! - 03/04/21
Following the Goverment allowing outdoor recreational sport to resume from 29th March we are delighted to reveal that we are now able to restart walks in a Covid-compliant manner, initially in small groups of 6. The number of groups available for each walk will depend upon the number of walk leaders available.
At the moment we are still not publishing a full diary but walks will be advertised on our Facebook and via our test message service with details of how to book which is on a first come, first served basis.
Our first walk back is on Wednesday 7th April, our 4.5 miles Barnburgh, Harlington and TPT Walk. However, the walk was fully booked in less than an hour after revealing the details on Saturday morning!
Should you wish to be notified of future walks via text message then please send an email to [email protected]
COVID-19 STATEMENT - 04/01/21
As expected the Prime Minister has placed England into a national lockdown due to Covid-19.
This unfortunately means that DVWG are as of this evening suspending all activities until restrictions are lifted.
We urge everyone to follow the government guidance to reduce the spread of this awful virus.
Please stay safe and we hope to see you all walking with DVWG once restrictions are lifted.
